M S Dhoni: Successful but........................

With Dhoni being considered as one of the most successful Indian team,  still some of the critics argue that there are problems with him and question the credit presented to this man. We would be highlighting these, during our discussions:
·         He hardly talks to the players in the ground. We can see clearly from the fact that often we see Tendulkar, Harbhajan, Sehwag, Gambhir or Zaheer talking to the players and motivate them. Similarly, Dhoni don't believe in the ability of his players and clear example of this was Yusuf Pathan during African tour who sat out in first two ODIs just because of Dhoni's disbelief that he can’t perform outside India. Another example is the exclusion of Saurabh Tiwary and S.Sreesanth who are very talented players. Saurabh should have been used in Africa by MSD. He has played just two matches and did not disappoint in either of them. Same is case with Sreesanth. This behaviour will frustrate the young players like Saurabh Tiwary.
·         Some people argue that, nobody can be good a leader without quality players. Hansie Cronje was good b’coz of Kirsten, Cullinan, Fannie, Donald, Pollock etc. Mark Taylor, Steve Waugh were good b’coz of McGrath, Warne,Waugh brothers, Ponting etc. Ponding was doing well bcoz of himself, Lee and some class players like Hussey, Clarke. Ranathunga shined b’coz of Desilva, Jayasurya, Murali, Kaluwithrana.... Dhoni definitely will not have been a good captain without Sachin, Sehwag, Gambir, Harbhajan, Raina, Zaheer. Captaincy is something where team performs even in the absence of big guns and that too, consistently. A large number of people still consider that Ganguly & Azhar lead team India wonderfully than any other fellows.
·         He failed to manage players to an extent and often we heard about his rift with Sehwag, Harbhajan, Zaheer, Yuvraj. This is where people considered Sourav Ganguly as best. Ganguly managed the players well.
·         Sreesanth needs captain like Sourav Ganguly, Imran Khan or Ricky Ponting who were naturally aggressive and showed their emotions and were capable of driving player like Sreesanth to perform well. Dhoni is thanda captain and he hardly show his emotions even team is wins or loses. Dhoni failed to manage players like Sreesanth and get the best of him by not backing him in the trouble times. This is where Ganguly was far better captain than Dhoni as he managed young Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag, Zaheer very well and made them examples in the history of world cricket. Dhoni is thriving on the legacy of Ganguly and certainly he doesn’t have an eye of picking up talent like Ganguly or Imran Khan.
·         Often we see him playing with defensive strategies. We hardly see him employing innovative and offensive strategies. Prime example is final test match in Cape town where he allowed South Africa to build score in excess of 300 after reducing them to 130 for 6. He opened the field and allowed Boucher and Kallis to settle down and form the big partnership. This has happened many times. I never saw in any test match whether in India or abroad in which he had 6 fielders surrounding the batsmen when spinners are bowling even if India is dominating in the match. Clearly shows his lack of faith in his bowlers and lack of creating correct strategy that suits to the situation.
·         No new player has been seen in his captaincy that can be said as developed by MS Dhoni. All the lead players have made their debut under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly or Rahul Dravid or Anil Kumble. Few players who made their debut in his captaincy failed to find a permanent place in the team. Dhoni failed to groom any player under his captaincy .Eg: Ravindra Jadeja, Murali Vijay, Pragyan Ojha, Amit Mishra, etc. Although there have been players like Yusuf Pathan who made some impact but a bare look on their career easily tells us that they achieved their status on their own.

The list continues...... but the reality remains that he is the one under whose captaincy India captured number one position in Tests. If MSD’s career ends just like that of Ganguly, then the abovementioned problems would certainly run through the veins of your mind once.
